Cybertruck and Category B Driving License: Can You Drive It?

Volant a palubní deska Tesly Cybertruck

In short: yes, you can drive a Cybertruck registered in Poland with a category B driving license – under three conditions: you have held a category B license for at least two years, the vehicle is registered with a GVW of up to 4,250 kg, and the registration document notes that exceeding 3,500 kg is due to an alternative drive. This is how we register every Cybertruck. Below, we explain where this exception comes from, what about trailers, and driving abroad.

Why is there an issue with category B?

Category B allows you to drive a vehicle with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3,500 kg. The Cybertruck weighs about 3,100 kg without load, so with passengers and luggage, it would need to be registered with a GVW above 3.5 t – formally a truck and category C. Therefore, when registering a Cybertruck, it's not enough to just "register the vehicle": it must be registered in a way that allows it to be legally driven with a standard driving license.

Exception for vehicles with alternative drive

EU driving license regulations provide an exception for vehicles powered by alternative fuels – including electric ones – whose weight exceeds 3.5 t precisely because of the heavy drive (battery). Poland applies this exception: a person holding a category B driving license for at least two years can drive such a vehicle with a GVW over 3,500 kg but not exceeding 4,250 kg, if the registration document notes that the weight limit is exceeded due to an alternative drive.

In our process, the Cybertruck is registered with a GVW of 4,250 kg and with the appropriate entry in the document. Thanks to this, after picking up the vehicle, you don't need any additional qualifications – a category B license held for two years is enough.

Three conditions to check before purchase

  • License tenure. Category B for at least 24 months. If you obtained your license recently, until two years have passed, another person meeting the condition can drive the Cybertruck.
  • GVW in the document. It must be a maximum of 4,250 kg – and that's how we register it.
  • Alternative drive annotation. This distinguishes the Cybertruck from a "regular" truck with a 4.25 t GVW. Without it, a road check may determine that you are driving without the proper qualifications.

What about a trailer?

The Cybertruck can tow up to 4,990 kg, but trailer qualifications are a separate matter. With just a category B, you can tow a light trailer up to 750 kg GVW. A heavier trailer requires a category B+E – and with a vehicle of 4,250 kg GVW, the vehicle combination quickly exceeds the limits that category B+E works with in Poland. If you plan to regularly tow a trailer over 750 kg, let us know before purchase – we'll consult it individually, rather than making general promises. More about towing itself in the article Towing and Load Capacity of the Cybertruck.

Driving abroad with a Polish driving license

A Polish category B driving license is recognized throughout the EU. However, whether the 4,250 kg exception will also apply in another country is more complex: the directive allows member states to apply this exception, but not all have done so in the same way. For clients living outside Poland, we check how it looks in their country before they buy a vehicle – and we do not provide general guarantees. Do you live in Germany, Sweden, Spain? Check your country in our checker and write to us, and we will respond specifically.

And category C?

A person with a category C can of course drive a Cybertruck regardless of the exception – but getting a category C just to drive a pickup doesn't make sense, since the alternative drive exception solves the issue. Category C1 (up to 7.5 t) is also sufficient.
